What Is Direct to Garment (DTG) Printing

Direct to garment printing is a state of the art process for printing on textiles by using a specialized printer with aqueous inkjet technology. DTG printers use a platen to hold a piece of fabric or garment in a fixed position and then spray the ink onto the fabric.

In order to achieve longer lasting, better looking prints, DTG printing necessitates pre-treating the fabric or material before being able to inject pigments directly onto it.

After printing, the fabric is cured with a heat press to stabilize the pigments and improve washing endurance.

Advantages of Direct to Garment Printing

At La Crete, we choose DTG printing because it offers some unique advantages when compared to similar printing methods. This allows us to produce the highest quality custom clothing on the market.

  • Direct to garment printing results in fabrics that have brighter and more vivid colors than those achieved through traditional methods of printing.
  • The pre-treatment and curing process flattens loose fibers, smoothing the substrate, and allows the ink pigments to achieve a stronger bond with the cloth fibers, resulting in far more durable prints which can withstand multiple washes and retain its color for years.
  • For natural textiles like cotton, linen, canvas, or jeans, DTG printing is the finest fabric printer. Even the darkest of materials can yield high-quality prints. If you’re looking for customized uniforms or personalized clothing in polyester fabric, we suggest using our sublimation printing services instead.
  • DTG prints offer much more precision and graphical fidelity than traditional printing methods. In a single pass, DTG printers can print shirts with graphics containing more than 16 million colors.
  • Since designs are applied directly onto the fabric, there’s very little need for stitching, cutting or sewing. By cutting down on labor, we are able to reduce total costs and speed up turnaround times without sacrificing quality.

No Limits on Customization

Traditional printing services limit customization and design options available because each new pattern or color requires pieces of cloth to be stitched or sewn together. Direct to garment printing, on the other hand, allows for almost limitless customization when it comes to patterns, colors, logos, text, and their placement.

Since designs are printed directly onto the garment, all you need is a standard design software like CorelDraw or Adobe Photoshop. You can create amazingly complex designs and they’ll be printed faithfully onto the fabric. If you’re struggling with designs, our in-house designers can help you out!

Even better, direct to garment also allows for richer hues and a true-to-life texture, so there is no difference between how a product looks on screen versus how it looks in real life.

Make Changes on the Go!

It used to be that if you printed a round of uniforms or t-shirts and weren’t satisfied with the final design, you’d have to go back to the drawing board and start from scratch. Well, with technologies like sublimation or direct to garment printing, that’s no longer the case.

Once you use our direct to garment printing services, all you need is the file for the original design and you’ll have full freedom and flexibility to make any changes before sending your new orders to the printer.

How We Do It

You’ll be surprised to know how simple, straightforward, and ingenious this whole process is. Three simple tools are all we need to make your masterpiece a reality, from start to finish:

  • A DTG printer, which is specifically manufactured for the purposes of correctly holding the fabric material and printing accurately.
  • Any of the natural textiles like cotton, linen, canvas, or denim are perfect candidates for DTG printing.
  • Finally, any commercial design software with which you can turn your imagination into visible colors on the computer.

Once we have your designs, it’s a simple and straightforward process:

  • We’ll apply your designs to our templates and send it for you to approve or ask for changes.
  • Once we’ve settled on a design, we will print a sample of your garments for you to review in person.
  • The production process only starts once you approve the sample.

Things to Watch Out For

You just need to remember the following facts in order to ensure you are fully aware of how this process works:

  • We recommend leaving out white in the intended design to be printed on the fabric. Although white ink is now available to produce that color, not all DTG printers are capable of handling this requirement. If you want to include white in your designs, use white cloth and leave that part of the design transparent.
  • DTG works best on organic fabric like cotton or jeans, if you want to print sportswear or custom uniforms, we suggest using our sublimated printing services, which use polyester.
